This is a large industry and completely multi-national for top models

However the number of people who rise to superstardom is small

The majority of highly paid work is placed through agencies

There are freelance models but usually these are people who have accepted a much lower profile and hence sometimes a lesser reward If you are under 18, you need to be with an agency or closely associated with a reputable studio and you always need a minder

Once over 18, the choices are wider, both the rewards and dangers are much larger

Most successful models have some sort of unique characteristic, have worked hard and have usually been lucky somewhere in their career Just being pretty doesn't automatically mean you can be a model Some people photograph quite differently to how they seem in person

Strangely, even quite unattractive people can make a living at modelling if they have some special attribute to offer, for example exquisite hands or legs

To get into modelling you have to really want to do it and be able to take a lot of rejection

There are various different types of models

Very important - there are a lot of unscrupulous people who exploit wannabe models
