Digital pictures consist of small square elements called pixels

One of the most common file storage formats for pictures is the '.jpg', in most programs there is provision for setting the amount of compression

Although pictures can be stored as quite small images, care must be taken to ensure that the compression is not taken too far

In heavily compressed .jpg files the 'blocking' effect becomes very apparent

In each of these 3 pictures the pixel count is 200x200 - but the perceived quality varies

At the we use '.jpg' for web pages, e-mail and at low compression for printing pictures with a small final size
